Venture into Advanced Technology for Piping Prefabrication
MMHE first began its shift to automation in piping works back in 2016 and has since developed its Centralised Piping Workshop (CPW) to feature numerous facilities that improve piping prefabrication work. These facilities have increased productivity by cutting production time, enabled more efficient use of materials, while also producing products of better quality. The CPW uses an impressive 3R RAMP module for work package creation to balance the flow of material and to control both material issuance and working arrangement. The system documents the material upon arrival and allocates them to respective drawings, which makes material calculation and documentation easier. This has also proven to improve the materials tracking process.
Whereas MMHE previously used manual welding, we have since introduced cut & bevel facilities and auto welding machines to increase productivity and welding quality in fabrication. Automation in pipe welding has not only cut down fabrication time, but also reduces consumables, both of which were drawbacks of manual welding. Clients who have visited our CPW are known to be impressed with our workshop’s devices, as well as the computer and system we use for drawings.
MMHE has recently implemented RFID as an addition to our existing barcode identification method to further improve our pipe spool tracking and management system. This ensures tracking, as well as a reduced search time for pipe spool. Digitalising pipe spool documentation has made live-tracking and monitoring the material easier.
Although the CPW’s pipe spool prefabrication services were initially exclusive to Heavy Engineering Operations, the services have now expanded to Marine Operations. CPW has introduced many other initiatives to improve piping fabrication as well as adding value to customers’ experience. We hope that our continual movement towards automation and digitalisation would further improve operational of our assets.
